Lambert Janse Dorlandt emigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam (New York), arriving aboard the ship Bontekoe (Spotted Cow) Aptil 16, 1663.
Lambert was born about 1639 and died about 1720 (age 79). He lived in Brooklyn for 17 years, in Staten Island for 34 years, and in East Jersey for five years. In 1715 Lambert moved to Somerset Co., New Jersey, near the present village of Harlingen, near Six Mile Run, a tributary of the Raritan River. On March 28th he purchased of Octavio Conraats 500 ac. The Dorland homestead still stands.
Lambert married Hermina Peters two years after arriving in America and had four children: Garret Janse, Mary, Elsie, and John.
Lambert and his brother Jan Gerretse Dorlandt, who preceeded him to this country in 1652, are the progenitors of the Dorland, Dorlon, Dorlan, Durland, and Durling families in America. Lambert has been named a "Founding Father of America."
The name "Dorlandt" means "Dry Land." The name has been spelled Dorland, Dorlon, Dorlan, Durland, Durling, and Dorlandt.
