Notes - The true origin of the Brederodes was probably as well known in contemporary Holland as it is in contemporary genealogy. The genus was a branch of the Teylingen's, a highly reputable Dutch family that had died out in the late thirteenth century. The first known lord of Brederode, Dirk I van Teylingen, had been an illegitimate son of Count Willem I of Holland with the Lady of Teylingen. Like his descendants, he was then protected by the Counts of Holland and brought it to Hofmaarschalk (Drossaert) of Holland.
