- Stadhouder of Gelre.
William was a son of John II, Lord of Egmond and Maria van Arkel, anda younger brother of Arnold, Duke of Gelderland.
He travelled with his brothers to the Holy Land (1458-1464) and was received in Rome by Pope Pius II.
William stayed most of the time in Guelders, where he supported his brother against his nephew Adolf of Egmond. After the incarceration of his brother, William led the pro-Burgundy party.
When Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy took over power in Guelders in 1473, he made William Stadtholder. In 1477 Mary of Burgundy includedWilliam in her Great Council of Mechelen and made him Knight in the order of the Golden Fleece one year later.
He married (1) Countess WALBURGA GRAVIN VAN MEURS, aka, Walburg Von MORS, born 1415 died 1459, daughter of Friedrich 4th (Walraven) Duke van Meurs and Engelberta van Kleef.
He married (2) ALEID KREIJNCK.
He married (3) MARGARETHA EVERTSDR VAN HOOGWOUD EN EVERTSWOUD.
Willem was employed by Stadhouder Karel Van Gelder.

Hij verwierf ingevolge deling met zijn broeder Hertog Arnoud: Egmond, Leerdam, Schoonderwoerd en Haastrecht en erfde 1451 IJselstein van zijn vaders broeder, steunde zijn broeder tot diens dood toe, trad na 1473 op als stadhouder van Gelre namens Karel de Stoute, die hem later Ridder in de Orde van het Gulden Vlies maakte.
